Working Paper: Case Study VENICE 2006-2007 ///

If out-migration to the mainland doesn’t stop, Venice could become a ghost town by 2030. Over the last 40 years, the population has shrunk by one half, whereas tourism has almost tripled in just the last ten years. This contrast points to the gradual transformation of Venice from a diverse city to a Disneyfied mono-functional city.

The study (downloadable as PDF file, 50 pages including photographs, graphics, text in English and Italien) provides information on the urban shrinkage of Venice focussing the processes of demographic aging, deindustrialization, centershift, disasters and touristification.
