Opening: October 16, evening

Duration: Oct. 16 to Nov. 23, 2008
Tues-Sun 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Admission: 5 / 3 Euro

To conclude the project, an exhibition and a two-day symposium is being held at the Akademie der Künste (Academy of Arts) under the title “Shrinking Cities ff. – Analysis, Interventions, Prognosis”. The focus is on the questions: How will this theme continue to develop globally in the 21st century? and How can interdisciplinary projects between art and science influence societal processes?

The exhibition in three chapters begins with a scientific and artistic analysis of the global phenomenon – with a focus on six cases in the developed industrial countries of North America, Europe, and Asia. In the second part of the exhibition, as at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum Frankfurt, nine city ideas for shrinking cities are presented as models of concepts for action. The third part of the exhibition casts its gaze into the future: How will the phenomenon develop in the 21st century in the context of climate change, new energy use, demographic aging, and changes in settlement structures? To this end, an extensive ensemble of maps showing the developments in coming decades and an interactive data installation are being produced.

At the public part of the concluding symposium, the first day will be devoted to the question of how critical knowledge production and mediation can favorably influence societal developments and what role art and culture, on the one hand, and science, on the other, can play in this.
